Medalist Concert Band

The Medalist Concert Band, a volunteer group of 70 musicians from the Twin Cities area, was founded in the fall of 1968. The band’s goals are to provide adult musicians with performance opportunities, deliver outstanding concerts to Bloomington and surrounding communities, and inspire young musicians by modeling music as a lifelong hobby. Since its founding, the Medalist Concert Band has given over 1,000 performances, many in partnership with high school and college bands. The Medalist season runs from September through July, averaging 16 concerts annually, including four as part of the Bloomington Center for the Arts Performance Series, national and worldwide venues. During June and July, the band performs in parks across the Twin Cities. In addition to concerts, they sponsor a “Band Camp” for rising 6th and 7th graders and the Earl C. Benson Concerto Competition which identifies talented wind and percussion high school musicians and provides the opportunity for them to solo with the band.

Twin Ports Wind Orchestra

The Twin Ports Wind Orchestra (TPWO) was founded in 1990 by Dr. Timothy Mahr, former Director of Bands at the University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD) and current Principal Conductor of the Minnesota Symphonic Winds. TPWO is a non-profit instrumental music organization comprised of the finest adult wind and percussion players in the greater Duluth/Superior region and is an outreach program of the UMD Music Department. Performing 4-5 concerts per year, the ensemble provides its members with the opportunity to grow in their abilities through the quality, intensity, and difficulty of the musical repertoire and the superb direction of Dr. Mark Whitlock, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at UMD. In keeping with its goal of outreach to the community, TPWO has established several Honors positions that are offered to area high school musicians who rehearse and play a concert with the band. This is a unique opportunity for the students to participate in an adult band and share a music-making experience with some of the Northland’s finest musicians. In addition, several small group ensembles perform at area functions, assisted living homes, service organizations, and churches.

Seward Concert Band

Established in 1977 and based in South Minneapolis, the Seward Concert Band grew out of musicians talking to each other in the neighborhood and going door to door recruiting. The mission of the Seward Concert Band is to provide for the education and growth of our members and audience through the public performance of music. Their goals are to meet neighbors who share an interest in making music, participate in a regularly scheduled rehearsal group as they renew instrumental music skills, serve as role models to young students, and support young students in their music making. The Seward Concert Band has always been a non-audition group, welcoming musicians of all ages and from all walks of life. In addition to 2-3 concerts a year, small mixed ensembles of band members also perform at various community events such as at the Twin Cities Marathon, local fairs, building and bridge openings, and weddings. Saxophone and brass ensembles also meet and perform regularly.

Minnesota Symphonic Winds (Host)

Minnesota Symphonic Winds (MSW) is an adult concert band serving the greater Twin Cities area. Led by Principal Conductor and Music Director Dr. Timothy Mahr and Associate Conductor Paul Kile, MSW’s gifted musicians bring the heart and soul of music to the rehearsal room and auditorium.  The band’s ongoing purpose is to provide continued musical education and performing opportunities for post-college age musicians and to enhance, enrich, and expand the musical experience available to audiences in the Twin Cities area. This is accomplished through collaboration with other musicians, conductors, and ensembles; supporting composers by commissioning new works which expand the band repertoire; and promoting the good work of others in our community through our music. The Minnesota Symphonic Winds presents 5-6 concerts each season at churches, schools, colleges, concert halls, and parks, locally, throughout Minnesota and surrounding states, and in venues around the world. Active in the creation and support of new band music, Minnesota Symphonic Winds has commissioned and premiered several compositions by well-known composers, including Daniel Kallman, John Zdechlik, Jodie Blackshaw, Carl Schroeder, Carl Holmquist, Kevin Day, and Timothy Mahr.
